Electric Shavers – History and How Early Years of Electric Razor
The year 2011 marks the eighty years since the invention of the electric razor. In this short time this important invention totally changed the way male grooming used to be. The research shows that today the electric razor has been used not only for the traditional wet shave but also has created whole new market of the dry shave as well. While the electric razor might be the main instrument in use, the shaving process has also started many industries including the shaving cream, lotions, creams, razors, and set of blades too.
Interestingly the first electric razors were started one decade before they hit the consumer market. The early electric razors were not only bulky and expensive but were quite hard to use. Started in 1931, this instrument is popular not only in the native America, The clean shave look was not accepted by the world even a hundred years ago. Most men used to have bears and that was seen as sign of strength and masculinity.
The Romans started shaving their faces and there was a tax on beards to promote the use of the razors too. In this time the beard was seen as the sign of barbarian or ignorant culture. Interestingly the first fifteen presidents of United States were clean shaven. The famous president Abraham Lincoln had beard during his fifty years of his later life.
The first electric razor was invented by the famous inventor John Barker His discovery was based upon his work as salon owner in New York. He was the first person to combine the electric motor to the razor. He was so happy with his invention that he started to have the dry shaves also. He used the copper flywheel with the electric motor for cutting of the hair and his contributions led to the creation of many inventions including the triple blade safety razor as well.
Pieter Van Gras was the designer of the first commercially sold electric razor. He purposed the single edged blade and the sleek design that has not changed much after that. The first commercially successful electric razor was called Cigar and was sold for fifteen dollars in 1939. These early razors were quite slow and but the freedom to use and the time saving was the main Electric Shavers attraction for their popularity. Shaving was time consuming in that time as the barber shop was the only place to have proper shave. Today the market of electric razors is dominated with brands like Braun, and Gillette.
