CHOOSING THE RIGHT DIAMOND BLADE
CHOOSING THE RIGHT DIAMOND BLADE
Before you begin, you must make the decision which is most important: the cost per cut versus the price of the blade itself. If the job is for occasional use or a smaller job, a low-priced blade might be the most cost effective.
However, be aware of blades manufactured in Asia, especially Korea, as they have been flooding the market in recent years and have not only been linked to sub-par performance but, in some tragic cases, have caused serious and permanent injury to operators.
If the job is larger or you are using the blade on a regular basis, a higher priced blade could actually be less expensive because it will actually deliver the lowest cost per cut.
For a really large job, the lowest possible cost per foot (sawing cost) is more important than the initial cost per blade.
Knowing the horsepower and type of the saw being used is crucial. Blades that are to be used on power cutters have to be rated at higher RPM's. High-speed cut-off blades are rated at appropriate higher RPM's.
The most mitigating factor in choosing a blade is identifying the material you are going to cut. This directly affects the life of the blade as it's directly tied to the cutting speed. Life and cutting speed should be matched to the material being cut as closely as possible to provide maximum performance.
Generally, the material which will be cut most often should be determined as well as the material for which top blade performance is most important.
Job requirement and/or user preference should govern choosing using wet or dry cutting. A power hand tool such as a power hand saw should be avoided because its electrical power source can be unsafe.
Wet cutting for concrete saws is a different story because you can cut deeper by using water as a coolant. Either wet or dry cutting blades can be used for masonry or tile saws.
Dry blades are popular for power cutters and are often used wet to control dust.
ALWAYS use wet blades with water. Dry blades may be used dry or wet depending on the equipment or job requirements.
Total segment heights can be misleading. Non-bearing diamond bearing segment bases may be necessary for brazing or laser welding processes.
The height of diamond blade segments alone is not always the truest measure of value by and of itself. Many other factors contribute to a blade's performance and value.
These include the hardness of the bond, the cutting power (torque) of the saw, the diamond size itself and, most importantly, how well the specification matches the material being cut.
Also consider the diffusion bond so that the mechanical bond process is guaranteed for a reasonable useful life of the blade.
Always consult your operator's manual and any pertinent literature relating to the tools you are using.
