Use a Head Lice Comb to Combat a Pesky Parasite
If you have a head lice problem in your home, or you are worried that your child could come into contact with someone who has such a problem, then you need the right information and the right tools to eradicate the problem from your home. In this fight, you will meet a special kind of comb that is an essential tool against these pesky parasitic insect invaders.
Contrary to popular belief, the parasitic louse does not fly or jump from host to host. Instead, it relies on either direct or indirect contact in order to move from one person to another. However, these insects are quick when probing fingers disturb their patch. It can be difficult trying to catch and pluck out individual insects either by hand or with tweezers. You need a special tool designed for these insects that, when used with the right technique, can make a big difference in the number of insects and nits residing in your hair. This essential tool can also help remove nits, which are the eggs that the adult insects lay and attach to hair strands.
Using a Head Lice Comb Effectively
It's no good buying a tool if you don't know how to use it properly. The same can be said of a head lice or nit comb. Just because you own one, doesn't mean you know how to use it properly.
Different types will require different techniques. The manual models should only be used on hair that has just been washed, whereas an electronic model should only be used on dry hair.
- Use a gently pointed object to create a cross on the top of the scalp. This will quickly section the hair into four large sections.
- Clip away three of the sections, and concentrate on just one.
- As you work through the section, divide it further into one inch sections, using a similar technique when straightening the hair.
- Place the teeth of the comb as close to the scalp as possible, and slowly drag it through the one inch section of hair.
- Make sure every stroke goes from root to tip each time, and ensure that the teeth are clean of any insects or nits, after every stroke. You can ensure this by wiping it on a paper towel or dipping it in a bowl of warm water or white vinegar.
- Once you have completed the first section, tie that section up, and keep it away from uncombed hair.
- Repeat steps 3 – 6 with each section.
- When you have finished, put any towels used straight into the washing machine on a hot wash.
- Repeat the entire process every seven days, until you are completely sure there are no more insects or nits living in the hair.
Choosing the right comb for your problem
Many over the counter chemical products for an infestation come with a free complimentary plastic head comb; however, it is not recommended that you use these. The teeth bend after one or two uses, and this can greatly compromise the effectiveness of the treatment.
Instead, only buy ones with metal teeth that are finely spaced apart. All electronic models will come with metal teeth anyway.
