The Pain With Ingrowns
Do you feel pain in your toes especially on your big toe? Is it swollen and reddish in color? Does it affect your everyday living that even wearing shoes makes it difficult for you? Then you are most probably suffering from an ingrown toenail.
This condition is characterized primarily by swelling, redness, soreness and warmth in the area affected. Ingrowns usually affect the big toe because of its proximity to the shoes and also the toenail characteristics. These become painful because the corner of the toenail curves down thus pressing down on your skin.
This condition has many causes. One is trauma or severe pressure caused by extreme sports and the materials that you use in cleaning your toenails. Another cause is fungi infection or the skin disease known as psoriasis. This condition is also caused by wearing shoes that compresses the toes thus resulting to the condition. Wearing high-heeled shoes also contributes to this condition because body weight is transferred from the heel to the big toe.
Treating ingrown is easy especially if it is not complicated and you do not have other medical conditions like diabetes. What you should do is to soak your foot in lukewarm water. Do this two to three times a day and having 15 minutes each time you soak. When the skin on the side of the nail is soft, massage it gently away from the nail. This will make room for your ingrown. After soaking, dry your foot. Avoid wearing shoes or sandals that are too tight. Instead, use sandals that have low heels and have open toes while you are still doing this treatment.
However, if you feel that your ingrown is not getting better after three to five days and you develop a fever, experience numbness and tingling sensation in your feet, it is best to consult a podiatrist (feet specialist). This also goes to those who have existing medical conditions like diabetes.
Cliché as it is but prevention is always better than cure. Experts have this to say for you to prevent ingrowns. First is to keep your feet always clean and dry. This prevents bacteria-formation that is one of the causes of ingrown. Next is to wear the right shoe size. It is not bad to follow fashion trend, but bear in mind that you can still be stylish without compromising comfort and safety. And most importantly, trim your toenails properly. Use toenail clipper and trim it just across so that your toenails is square-shaped. This prevents curving and digging of toenails into the skin.
Ingrowns is just one toenail problem - another is yellow toe nails. Follow ingrowns’ tips and remove nail polish are just some of additional advice on how to get rid of yellow toenails
