Kitchen Sink Garbage Disposal
Hello. Click's Plumbing here to share with you some self-help tips for your kitchen sink garbage disposal. Did you know that 50% of all disposal calls are easily fixed yourself and don't require the expense of having a licensed plumber come out to your home? Our goal is superior customer service. With that in mind, we like to give our customers the information they need to save money whenever possible. Our hope is that when you have a bigger problem that you are unable to handle yourself, that you will call us for the repair.
The most common disposal problems are as follows:
- The disposal just hums. The unit is jammed and the blades must be freed.
- The jam is caused by something being lodged between the housing and the cutting mechanism. To fix this, disconnect power to the disposal. Turning the switch off will kill power to the unit. For the safest approach, pull the power plug from the wall outlet under the sink. If the unit is hard wired from the wall, locate the breaker that powers the disposal and flip it off.
- The disposal comes with an allen tool used for un-jamming the blades. If this tool has been lost or your plumber didn't leave it with you, a standard allen wrench will work. You just have to find the right size. On the bottom of the disposal in the center is an opening where the allen tool will go in. Insert the tool and twist it back and forth to dislodge the item. Once it spins freely, you are done with that.
- Now look into the disposal from the top with a flashlight to try and determine what caused the problem. If a large object such as a utensil is inside, you will have to reach in and pull it out. If you do not see an obvious object, proceed on.
- Restore the power source to the disposal.
- Turn on the water and then the disposal switch and let run. If a loud banging around is heard turn off the power, water, and disconnect the power source. You will have to reach into the unit, locate the object, and remove.
- Again restore the power source, turn on the water, and then the switch and let run until a smooth humming sound is heard. You are now done.
- The disposal doesn't make any sound when the switch is turned on. This means the safety reset switch has tripped. This can be caused by a variety of reasons.
- First you will turn the disposal power switch back off.
- Locate the red reset button located on the bottom of the disposal. Push the button in to reset the unit.
- Now turn on the water and then the switch. If the blades spin, you should be good unless a loud banging noise is heard within the disposal.
- If a loud banging around is heard turn off the power, water, and disconnect the power source as stated earlier.
- Now look into the disposal from the top with a flashlight to try and determine what caused the problem. You will now have to reach in and pull out the object.
- Again restore the power source, turn on the water, and then the switch and let run until a smooth humming sound is heard. You are now done.
- If the blades do not turn after resetting the disposal, you will have to follow the un-jamming steps mentioned earlier.
