What to Do About Ear Wax
If you have ear wax buildup in the outer ear, don't worry, it is a perfectly normal function of the ear. Ear wax is the substance our bodies make to protect our ear canals from things like dirt and infection. However, if you have ear wax buildup in your inner ear, this is a problem and it usually means you've taken all the healthy ear wax from your outer ear and unknowingly compacted it into your inner ear by using things like cotton swabs or earplugs.
Many people are also born with a condition called twisted ear canal, and this can cause earwax buildup because the twisted ear canal has a slight bend in it, which makes it more difficult for ear wax to flow out naturally.
If you are experiencing noticeable dryness, itching, pain, or hearing loss, then it is possible you have excess ear wax buildup in your inner ear.
The easiest way to prevent ear wax buildup is simply to make sure you clean your ears properly. I don't not suggest using cotton swabs or sticking anything inside your ear. You shouldn't put anything very deep into your ear, ever. In fact it is recommended that you simply use a damp cloth draped over the end of your finger, and gently wiping only the parts of the ear you can reach with the cloth-covered finger. Also, don't use a washcloth that is too wet or soapy, as excess moisture or soap inside the ear has been known to cause infection.
Another good technique that works for many people is called the hot water bottle technique. You should simply fill the hot water bottle up with warm water, and lie down with your head resting on the bottle, and your affected ear directly pressed against the bottle. This will help loosen the ear wax and cause it to come out much easier.
If those techniques don't work for you, then you could try one of the many earwax removal products available to buy online. Just remember to keep safety first. I wouldn't recommend any of the "ear picks" that are sold, just because you shouldn't stick something into your ear, but some of the dissolvers are mostly made of Carbamide Peroxide, which helps dissolve plugs of earwax. If these products still don't help your ear wax, you should go see a doctor.
