Ancient Beastly Sword - The Scottish Highland Claymore Sword
The Ancient Beastly Sword usually refers to a humongous Gladiator type sword often found in Eurore or the Mediterranean during Medieval Times. One of the most popular Beastly Swords was the Scottish Claymore Sword. It's a monstrous sword a lot larger than what is needed to behead or defeat even the strongest opponent. However you have to be very strong to weild one of these. There are two different types of Scottish Claymore Swords.
The first type was made to be held with both hands. This is the one you would have seen if you ever watched the movie Braveheart. This weapon had a cross hilt, which is sometimes known as a cross guard. These are two handles that protrude at right angles from the blade. These were typically used by Scottish Highlanders. The other type of weapon is known as the Basket Hilted Broadsword.
This weapon was popular in the 16th Century. Basket Hilted means that it had a basket shaped guard that was used to protect the hands. By Broadsword this means that it was an unusually long sword with a double edge blade. Even to this day, the British Army has Highland Regiments still remaining that use this weapon exclusively as their full dress sword.
The Two Handed Scottish Claymore Sword was used around the end of the Medieval as well as the Early Modern Periods. Around 1500 - 1700 AD the English and the Scottish Clans used these swords in battle with each other over borders. A typical two handed Claymore is about 55 Inches Long and weighs about 5.5 pounds. The "Clamshell Hilted" Claymore isn't well known these days, but back then it was very popular and much used in battle.
