A Concise Introduction to Sugaring Hair Removal
Sugaring is a somewhat obscure form of epilation (hair removal) that many people aren't aware of. I only heard of it myself a year or so ago and was immediately intrigued. Sugaring is easy, cheap, superior to waxing and useful for a wide range of hair-removal needs. Here's a little background information on sugaring.
Origins
Sugaring is said to come from ancient Egypt around 1900 BC, where a smooth and hairless body was also considered to be a symbol of youth and beauty. Very similar in theory and application to the process of "waxing," it is therefore sometimes also referred to as "sugar waxing" or "Persian waxing." Like the name suggests, sugaring is done with a gel or paste composed primarily or sugar. This mixture is considered more effective, easier and less painful than waxing for several reason:
- It can be administered at room temperature as a gel, eliminating the potential for burns;
- it does not adhere to skin, so the process is less painful overall;
- it can be made cheaply at home and self applied;
- since it is sugar based it cleans up easily and completely with water only, dissolving and wiping away on contact.
Downsides
The sugaring method removes hair in the same way wax does, by trapping each individual follicle in the paste or gel, which is then quickly removed in order to yank the hairs out by the roots. Many people still claim it hurts less than waxing for the reasons listed above, however there is still going to be pain involved and it's important to understand that before you attempt this method.
There is also the potential for irritation caused by the removal of hairs by the roots, which is more or less depending on each person. Individual skin sensitivity or reactions should be evaluated, again prior to investing in kits or having large parts of your body sugared.
To give you an idea of potential irritation: I am Caucasian with a light complexion that tans more than it burns, and I'm pretty resilient overall. When I sugared a small section of leg hair I got redness and some swelling where each hair was pulled within about five minutes; the swelling subsided in about fifteen minutes, the redness in about thirty. As a caveat, my pulling technique was pretty amateur and I think I broke/aggravated quite a lot of the follicles. A clean pull might yield less obvious irritation, and also consistent application.
Application
Sugaring is versatile enough to be good for all parts of the body, including legs, arms, back, face and bikini area. You can have it done at beauty salons that deal with hair removal techniques (although it is fairly obscure, it might be difficult to find someone who does it,) buy inexpensive kits that include everything you'll need (these usually use the paste form,) and also make your own sugaring mixture at home and apply it yourself, in either the gel or paste form.
To clarify, the gel is used at room temperature and is solid, malleable and slightly sticky. It's rolled into a ball and flattened over large areas in the opposite direction of hair growth, then pulled rapidly in the direction of hair growth. The paste is heated and used with strips of fabric the same way seen with waxing.
Sugaring can be a viable alternative for people who don't like waxing because of the pain, the time, or even the cost associated it.
