How does Reflective Insulation Work?
As Reflective Insulation has been one of the most effective insulation solutions over the period of time, it is no more the issue to discuss its comparison with other bulk insulation techniques. Even more, Reflective Insulation does a very good job in compare to fiberglass.
Also during summer time your house picks most of the heat from ceiling part which further makes your room or house hotter. With using Reflective Insulation you can keep your house 30-40 % cooler and also get the cost benefit by saving money for adopting cooling solution which consumes electricity.
Foil Insulation (Reflective Insulation) basically works by a simple principle that is reflection principle. It's a simple phenomenon that if we can keep radiant energy or light energy directly on any object then that object will get the heat soon and will become hot. The science and quantum physics state that energy can just be transformed from one form to another and it can't be eliminated. By the above statement, when sun rays hits directly your attic constantly then it is but obvious that your ceiling going to be hot soon. But, by applying Reflective Insulation or Foil Insulation solution, sun rays are reflected without allowing them to concentrate on the upper part of ceiling and thus cooling is achieved naturally.
Also with this simple science principle, second law of Thermodynamics also plays the role in the impressive affectivity of Reflective Insulation. According to this law, in a space given, heat goes to cold by one of three ways.
- Conduction
- Convection
- Radiation
Conduction:
When two surfaces come into contact, warm surface transfer the heat to the cooler surface until they both get equal amount of heat. As we discussed above, these law we can see working in the absence of Reflective Insulation, where hot surface of ceiling heat up the inner climate of room until both the temperature gets to equal.
Convection:
It is the movement of air caused by the air being warmed. Warm air progresses towards the cool point where air is cool.
Infrared Radiation:
Radiant energy travels in all the direction seeking cooler object to strike, and when it encounters, it generates heat.
Radiant barriers and Reflective Insulation (Foil Insulation) works by lessen the amount of radiation incident on the Reflective Insulation. As Foil Insulation (Reflective Insulation) reduces the amount of radiation, more of the heating rays are reflected and doesn't get chance to pass through it, which helps in keeping room temperature lower.
Reflective Insulations such as Foil Insulation usually made of aluminum foil of two layers to prevent the radiant heat of sun to pass through it. Also, the layer of bubble is included in between the two layers of foil. Study clearly indicates that reflective insulation resist radiant heat to pass through it by 97%.
