Gillette Fusion Refill
Gillette has a particular strategy of making money using only part of their product. Gillette knows they will have a monetary loss on a one time buy of their razor handle. The first time buyer who buys a Gillette razor handle with a few blades does not have to spend too much money. They can reuse the handle but they need to get more blades. This is where Gillette makes its profit; the razor blade cartridge refills. The razor blades wear out and need to consistently be replaced. Due to this constant need to replace razor blades and the fact that only a Gillette razor will fit on a Gillette handle (there are no less expensive generic brand blades) the company is able to charge any price they want.
The average man or woman in this country changes blade cartridges about every two weeks and spends about a minimum of $200 per year just on blades. This does not include money spent on razor handles, shaving cream, and aftershave products. With the high price of razor blades, consumers want to make sure they get their money's worth, and make sure those blades last. Wouldn't it be great if you could squeeze more life out of your razor blades before having to replace them? Not only would this be easier on your wallet but it would also cut down on the amount of waste going into landfills. Don't laugh! We toss out almost two billion disposable razors and blade cartridges each and every year.
One way to extend the life of your razor blades is to shave when your hair is wet. Hair strands become a lot softer after they absorb water. During or just after a shower is a great time to shave. If you shave at other times, it's important to wet the area to be shaved with warm water for several minutes. A warm, damp towel is ideal and can be a luxurious way to relax before you shave. Shaving cream also helps to lock in moisture and prevent the hair or whiskers from drying out while you are shaving.
Another way to extend the life of your razor blades is to thoroughly dry your blade after each use, and before storing it away. Blades become dull due to oxidation more than from shaving. When water stays on the blade for a prolong period of time, the blade oxidizes. This causes corrosion making the blade blunt and jagged. By drying your blade with a towel after use, you can double your shaves per blade. This is the simplest and easiest way to prolong the life of your blades. You may also want to store your blades outside the bathroom to avoid contact with steam when you take hot showers.
The best way to verify that these methods actually work is to test them for yourself. Take note of how many shaves you get when you don't use these techniques versus how many shaves you get when you do. You just might be pleasantly surprised.
