If you're looking for or need a wig, I'm sure you know this is no time to cut corners. Although wigs have come a very long way, there is still a huge range of varying quality out there and buying a substandard, ill fitting or low quality wig can really contribute to it not looking natural or "looking wiggy" as it is sometimes called.
So, what makes a high quality wig? There are several things and I will go over them in this article. Here is what you need to consider to ensure you're getting the highest quality, most natural looking wig.
1. The Quality Of The Hair: It goes without saying that synthetic hair will not look nearly as natural as human hair. It's almost unanimous these days that human hair is the way to go. However, in the world of human hair, there is a huge range of varying quality. Hair that is going to be used on a wig should be soft, with the cuticle left intact, and processed as little as is possible.
2. Realistic Hair For Your Features: Much of the hair used for human hair wigs is Chinese or Indian. That means, it will usually be straight, jet black and very course. When I first bought many of my early wigs, the hair that came with them was so thick my husband used to joke that I could floss my teeth with it. I'm Caucasian and my bio hair is pretty fine, so my wearing a wig that was made from Indian or Chinese hair would've certainly outed me. It just would not have looked real. Although most African American clients do just fine with most Indian or Chinese donor wigs, Caucasian women really have to be careful here.
3. Realistic Density For Your Age: One great thing about wearing a wig is that you can certainly improve upon what God gave you. If your hair texture was bad, or you could never grow your hair long, these won't be problems with a wig. However, it is not going to look realistic if you're over 30 and wearing a full, thick wig with the density of a teenager. Of course everyone wants a full head of hair, but make sure it's something you could actually grow or pull off with your bio hair.
That said, chances are you had thinning or thin bio hair recently which is why you're going with a wig. It's very common to think a normal density wig has "too much hair" at first because you are so used to having thin hair. It's important to have a sense of reference as to what is normal for your age.
4. Realistic Fit: It's vital that any wig fit as close to your head as possible. If it doesn't, the hair is going to fall too far away from your face and give you away. A correct fit ensures that the hair looks like it is growing out of your head.
5. Realistic Part: This is where so many wigs fail. The hair quality can be great. The fit can be just right, but if the part is machine wefted or the part looks sewn, this can kill a wig. So few wig makers get this right. Especially with today's longer styles, usually a part line in a wig is very noticeable. It has to look like real skin and scalp to be realistic. There are very few wigs on the market who achieve this.
6. Realistic Color: Make sure that the color you chose for your wig matches your skin tone and eyebrow / eyelash color. It's fine to get highlights and this is actually a good idea because it can draw out your features, but don't chose a color that you could never pull off with bio hair. Stick to a natural color for the base. If you're going for a hair color that is a stretch, make sure you have a tiny peek of roots put into it. Otherwise, people are going to wonder how you can have colored hair without ever showing even the slightest hint of roots.

Subconsciously, I must have known this because I never felt confident wearing them the way that I do now.
