German vs Japanese Hairdressing Scissors
When I began hairdressing, I purchased a pair of german scissors which I only paid a small amount for. Naturally I was expecting them to be sufficient for basic hair cutting, but I certainly never expected them to stand the test of time, let alone offer a high cutting experience. To be fair, I was pleasantly surprised with how good they were for the price and with how long they lasted, and this started my allegiance with German scissors.
I stuck with German hairdressing scissors for years, purchasing from companies such as Fisher and Jaguar, two of the most renowned distributors of hairdressing scissors in professional salons. I gradually worked my way up to the Jaguar Satin Plus, an absolutely excellent scissor in itself, and one with which I have completed many a cut. I would without a doubt, recommend Jaguar scissors at both ends of the spectrum, as their lower budget scissors, designed for apprentices are absolutely excellent. Once you start getting higher up the scale; however, i felt that the quality of the scissors wasn't quite represented in the price.
It was then that I considered turning away from Germand crafted hairdressing scissors and decided to take a look at the Joewell Professional scissors. Many of the top stylists in the salon in which i worked at the time were already utilising Joewells and so i figured that if they were good enough for them then I would certainly find the benefits of purchasing a pair.
The first pair that I looked at was the lowest end of the Joewell Spectrum, which was the Joewell New Era scissors, as I wasn't sure of how I would feel switching allegiances from German to Japanese! The first cut with them did take some getting used to I must admit, but once i had crossed that hurdle, I found i was able to create all the latest haircuts with ease like a consumate professional.
After a few years, I needed to replace my initial pair of Joewell hairdressing scissors, and this is when i started looking up the range a little but further. I was blow away by the sheer quality and precision engineering that was offered in the shape of the Joewell Classic Pro scissor, as it is so finely balanced and exceptionally well made. I found that by spending a little bit more on Japanese scissors, it really does take you into another realm altogether with regards professional hairdressing.
I would conclude by saying that I feel that German Scissors really represent great value and performance at the lower end of the scale, for trainee hairdressers or home use, but once you are an intermediate user or even advanced hairdresser, I would recommend looking more towards Japanese scissors, crafted out of quality materials such as the well renowned Joewell Scissor. Hope this enlightens you slightly about the differences between the two.
