The history of laser hair removal and Botox
Laser hair removal methods and technology didn't get off to the best of starts, with the first three methods metaphorically 'removed from shop shelves' because they were found to be ineffective, untested and in at least two of the three cases, potentially harmful. The first of these came in 1969 and was based on a fibre optic probe, but little to no testing was done on this and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) quickly removed it from circulation. A similar situation occurred ten years later and in 1995 it seemed as though problems had been ironed out and treatments had become effective, but this was not to be and the third piece of technology was removed from circulation.
Now, the laser treatments used are proven to work, at least that is true of the ones that are approved by the FDA. It is the FDA seal of approval that consumers should look for, and for a registered cosmetic surgery clinic that employs trained and experienced nurses and aesthetic practitioners to carry out the treatments.
Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair (known as Melanin) with an intense pulse of laser light. This laser light effectively destroys the hair from the root and in many cases prevents the follicle from producing hair again. Until recently, the treatment was only effective on those with fair skin and dark hair as the laser light was attracted to the dark pigment in the hair, but now certain clinics use technology that is effective on blonde, grey and even vellus hair, meaning no matter what type of skin or hair you have, there is a good chance that laser hair removal will work.
As with laser hair removal, Botox has been developed over many years and is now used for more than just lines and wrinkles. Botox injections can be used to treat Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and migraines, and is used by many for these purposes as well as to reduce the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles. It was approved for cosmetic use by the FDA in 2002 and has been adopted by members of the public and celebrities all over the world to help them look younger by reducing the appearance of frown lines, smile lines and other instances of wrinkles.
