Haircutting Techniques and Tips For the In-Home Barber Shop
The cost of a typical haircut can vary greatly depending upon the requested style and options. It is rare these days to pay less than $10 for a haircut. If you are a family with kids, haircutting expenses can really add up. Investing in a set of hair clippers is a great way to save money during these tough economic times. Even if you have no hair cutting experience, it is not too difficult to master. Listed below are some tips and suggestions for selecting the proper hair clippers and some basic hair cutting advice.
Not all clippers are created equally. The clippers commonly found in big box retail stores usually incorporate low cost magnetic motors. This type of motor uses electromagnetic force in conjunction with a spring to vibrate the cutting blade back and forth. Magnetic motor enabled clippers may be sufficient enough for basic hair cutting needs. If you plan to cut really thick or wet hair then consider clippers that utilize pivot or rotary style motors. A pivot motor also utilizes electromagnetic energy to move the cutting blade but without the use of a spring. Pivot motors provide almost double the cutting power over magnetic motors and work well with wet hair. The most powerful and expensive clippers utilize rotary motors. The cutting blade is another important factor to consider. The more expensive clippers incorporate detachable blade systems while the inexpensive clippers generally use a fixed blade system with comb attachments.
Once you have settled on clippers appropriate for your needs the next step is to prepare for the actual hair cut. Have your hair cutting recipient sit in a chair high enough for you to comfortably work the clippers all the way around their head. Use a simple sheet with some baby powder around the neck to keep hair off clothes or bare skin. For boys and guys, start with just the sides if you are cutting hair for the first time. Cut up to a line equal with the temple all the way around then use attachment combs if you wish to fade up into the top area. Stroke the clippers up and away from the head for a more consistent fade. Move on to the top once you are comfortable with the sides. The largest comb attachment available in your clipper set may be all you need for the top. If you are feeling adventurous use a comb to raise the hair on top to the desired length then run the clippers across the surface of the comb. Unless you are a stylist or the ladies of the home are very forgiving, it may be best to leave their haircutting needs to the experts.
Hair cutting for beginners is often a trial and error experience. It becomes easier with repetition. The cost of a good hair clipper set is easily recouped after just a few haircuts. The long term benefits are worth it even if the disgruntled face in the mirror disagrees.
