Moisturizing Shaving
Shaving your Head - 101
Baldness is very common among guys. Many of us try to avoid balding by taking medicinal drugs like Finasteride or by applying topical options like Minoxidil. But these are only short-term solutions. Some others make a decision to shave their head completely to avoid the frequent and unattractive horseshoe pattern. No more doubts, no more treatments, no more prescription drugs. Sounds fantastic, right?
Shaving your head has become more of a trend and a lifestyle rather than a result of male pattern baldness. You might ask yourself, "How will it look?" and I can promise you, that virtually all men look surprisingly good with a shaved head. Besides a bald head stands for confidence and masculinity.
But enough with the talking, let's get started.
Shaving Utilities:
Razor:
A sharp and good shaver is crucial for a good and close shave. Nearly all of the razors I experimented with were dull and resulted in a rather uncomfortable shaving experience.
Virtually all of the other head shavers I know implement a Mach3 razor, but I found three or more blades to be quite unpleasant on your scalp and much more likely to give you razor burn. The most beneficial one for shaving your head, from my own experience, is the Gillette Sensor Excelwith only two blades.
Shaving Gel:
Use the same Shaving Gel/Cream you utilize for your facial skin. If you never shave your facial skin with a razor, I would probably highly recommend a shaving gel for sensitive skin with aloe Vera as a key component. Aloe Vera is very moisturizing and allows to make the razor move smoothly across the scalp. I have a preference for the Gillette gel for sensitive skin.
Aftershave:
Don't work with an aftershave with alcohol, as it dries out your skin and will make the scalp really sensitive. I would suggest using a beneficial, non-comedogenic moisturizer.
Shaving Routine:
1. Moist your scalp with warm water or take a hot shower. The warm water opens the the skin's pores and makes the hair softer.
2. Implement a nice amount of shaving gel/cream. Work it in as good as possible, right up until you have a good lather going and let it rest for at least 2-3 minutes. This part is essential. You really want to grant the lubricant enough time to soften the hair.
3. Start out Shaving ALONG WITH the grain. This is crucial. If you shave every day, you don't want to shave against the grain, because that will result in razor burn and irritation. Start with your dome and follow up with by the back and the sides of the scalp. Use small slow strokes and don't rush it.
Over time you will find out a method that works out best for you.
4. Rinse your head with cold water for about 10-20 seconds. The chilly water closes the skin pores and minimizes itchiness.
5. Apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer. I found Cetaphil Cream to be extremely good. If you are planning to go outside, put on a baseball cap or apply a sunscreen with at the very least SPF 15.
