Multi Shears

While glass is used for various purposes like decorations, containers, crockery, containers and others, a novel glass forming technique called glass blowing has further widened the range of use of glass. Invented sometime during the end of BC, the inflating property of the substance has seen a variety of shapes and sizes and also uses. A molten blob of glass is expanded by blowing a small amount of air into it. The viscous nature and the strong chemical bonds with which the atoms are held together contribute to the shaping of the glass. Once the bubble cools down, it stiffens and forms the desired shape. The professional who blows the air into the glass bubble with the help of a blowpipe or blow-tube is called a gaffer or simply glass blower or glassmith.
There are two major techniques of glass blowing: Free-blowing and mold-blowing. Free-blowing involves gathering a molten portion of glass around an end of the blowpipe and blowing short puffs of air into it. This blob is then shaped according to the requirement. Skilled glass blowers can twist and turn, swing and rotate the blowpipe to produce a variety of glass objects from wine glasses to window panes.
Mold-blowing technique uses a mold made of wood or metal of the desired shape. Air is blown into a blob of molten glass at the end of the blowpipe, which is placed inside the mold of the desired shape. This kind of glass blowing is not dependent on the skill of the worker. This method is used for making of tableware and crockery. The molds can be single piece or multi-pieced ones, the difference being the way the finished material is removed from them. This method has the advantage of speed over the free-blowing method, thus contributing to the mass production and distribution of glassware.
The technique of glass blowing involves three furnaces. The molten glass is poured into the first furnace and is allowed to take shape. The second furnace, called "glory hole", is used to reheat any required areas as the glass piece takes shape. The "annealer" or Lehr is the third furnace takes a few days to cool the glass slowly and steadily. There are other tools also that are used for this process like marver, seers, tweezers, paddles, shears, punty or pontil and others.
