Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is a steel alloy which consists of a minimum of 10.5 or 11% chromium content by mass. One of the major advantages of stainless steel is that it does not stain, corrode or rust as easily like ordinary steel. Stainless steel is also known as corrosion-resistant steel or CRES. Stainless steel is used quite often when a combination of the properties of steel and resistance to corrosion are required.
Stainless steel is used for numerous industrial and commercial applications owing to its resistance to corrosion and staining, low maintenance, comparatively low cost, and excellent lustrous quality. There are around 150 grades of stainless steel, among which fifteen are the most commonly used. Stainless steel is put to several other uses too. Stainless steel is used in the manufacture of cookware, hardware, surgical instruments, industrial equipment, and as a structural alloy in the automotive and aerospace industry and as construction material in large buildings. Stainless steel is also used in the manufacture of jewellery and watches. Certain firearms integrate parts made of stainless steel as a substitute for blued or parkerized steel. Some of the handgun models, such as the Smith & Wesson Model 60 and the Colt M1911 pistol, are made wholly from stainless steel. Some automotive manufacturers use stainless steel as decorative highlights in their vehicles.
There are various kinds of stainless steels. For example, the addition of nickel lends stability to the austenite structure of iron. Such steels become non-magnetic and less brittle at low temperatures. In order to attain greater hardness and strength, more carbon is added. If such steels are subjected to sufficient heat treatment, they could be used as razor blades, cutlery, etc. Tremendous quantities of manganese are quite often used in different stainless steel compositions. Manganese retains an austenitic structure in the steel just like nickel, but at a relatively lower cost.
One of the unique advantages of stainless steel is that it is 100% recyclable. An average stainless steel object is made up of about 60% recycled material, out of which an approximate 40% originates from end-of-life products and 60% from the manufacturing processes.
