What To Pack When You Go Travelling?

Going on holiday is mostly about getting out into the world and having fun - but you have to plan properly in order to have the best time possible. One of the first steps in accomplishing that is packing. Knowing what to bring on a trip can be confusing, and where you'll be going plays a huge role in what you'll want to pack. One thing's for sure, though: You should always pack as little as possible, and only bring the essentials. Travelling light is the best way to have a carefree holiday; having to lug around multiple heavy and bulky bags can really bog you down.

The Essentials

Regardless of where you are going, there are some things that you simply shouldn't leave home without. Make sure to include these items on your packing checklist:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Razor
  • Hair items like a brush, a comb and a hair dryer, depending on your needs
  • Makeup
  • Soaps, shampoos and conditioners if you plan on staying in very low-budget hotels or hostels

The preceding items are generally things that you can buy if you do forget to pack them - but even being en route without them can be decidedly unpleasant. It's best to make those things your top priority and make sure that they are among the first ones placed in your bag. If you travel frequently, keeping a separate set of these items and reserving them for travel can make packing much, much easier.

Clothes

First of all, there is truly no need to pack a separate outfit for every single day of your holiday - unless it is a high-end cruise or some other special occasion. Otherwise, pack separate underthings for each day and a couple of different pairs of pants, jeans, shirts, blouses and other regular clothing. Aim to pack clothes that are basically the same color, so they can be mixed and matched with ease. Keep in mind that in most cases, you should be able to find a place to do a bit of laundry if necessary.

Beyond packing basic items of clothing, you'll want to be prepared for the worst. Do a bit of research about the area you'll be visiting and what the weather is like there during this time of year. If it's warm during the day but chilly at night, throw in a few polypropelene shirts or a Gore-Tex shell just in case. Those things also come in handy in the event of inclement weather, including rain. Nothing's worse than being somewhere strange without the right kinds of clothes, so plan ahead.

Finally, chances are that different types of footwear will be needed. For casual walking, hanging out and for while on the road, select a comfortable but lightweight pair of shoes. If you plan on hiking or doing an extensive amount of walking, bring along study hiking boots. Invest in a cheap pair of flip-flops or thongs - you'll want to slip them on if you use a public restroom or shower.

Extras

Beyond the basics and clothes, several small things can make a big difference in terms of how comfortable you are during your travels. Fanny packs are a traveller's best friend; backpacks are, too. Either one allows you to keep an assortment of items on hand wherever you go, including maps, snacks and drinks. A high quality money belt is also a smart idea; you can keep your cash, passport, tickets and other important things in one and out of harm's - or thieves' - way.

Finally, staying comfortable while travelling is important. Bring along a few sets of decent earplugs, especially if you are a light sleeper. They will help you get a good night's sleep after a busy day of sightseeing. Before leaving, type up basic directions and key attractions that you'd like to visit in each city you are stopping at, and be sure to bring it all along. Don't forget to bring along the confirmation numbers and telephone numbers for each hotel you'll be staying at, and make sure that you have contact telephone numbers for people back home. Bring a camera, and film if necessary, and plan on having a great holiday!
