History And Evolution Of Shears
Shears today serve many purposes. They are being used in our daily lifestyle and have made our work easier and systematic. They are manually operated device with huge sharp blades on the end to cut things in a systematic and an easy way. There are various types of shears available today with various kinds of purposes to fulfill. A pair of shears has been specially designed for almost every purpose.
Shears also known as scissors, originated in the ancient Egypt period somewhere around 1500BC. Around 3,000 to 4,000 years ago, the first pair of shears was invented and was publicly viewed in Mesopotamia. They were the kind of ‘spring scissors' with two huge bronze blades. The design although for the pair of scissors was the same as of now, earlier, it was made up of bronze.
Then slowly and gradually, Romans invented the Cross-bladed shears around AD 100. Spring scissors continued their existence till the sixteenth century. A revolution erupted in the invention of scissors. And that was with the introduction of Pivoted shears. The idea is still prevalent in the modern invention of scissors.
Earlier, the spring scissors were made by continuously heating the iron or steel bar, and then beating up the bar into flat and shaping the ends to blades. The centre was then again heated to form the spring, and to turn it out to be flexible it was again cooled down. During the middle period and Renaissance age, such an approach of manufacturing shears was highly prevalent.
It was till 1761, when pivoted scissors were not of so much importance. It was only when Robert Hinchliffe got the first pair of modern shears made up of polished steel, it gained importance and scissors were then manufactured and prepared using stainless steel. This is how Robert Hinchliffe also got the tag of the ‘fine scissor manufacturer' in London.
With the passing time, came 19th century and with it came another approach of preparing scissors. Steel was hammered to form the blades and the handles were prepared by punching holes in the steel.
Fiskars Corp. in Finland, in late 90's developed another approach and recently used method of shear manufacturing. The approach and method are still used for manufacturing shears.
