Steel Japan

The Major Players of Steel today - 2011
The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) consists of 36 US companies operating well over one hundred plants that specialize in steel and employ over 40,000 people. SMA members account for over seventy percent of domestic steel production within the US.
On an international scale, SMA members are widely dispersed across North America, with 31 located in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The SMA is the primary trade association for scrap-based electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmakers and rerollers. In 2008, EAF's are expected to produce approximately 54.6 million metric tons, or 60 percent of the total steel manufactured in the US.
Trans Pacific Steel is a major upper sized steel company that deals internationally as well. TranspacificSteel is expected to make major advances by the end of the next quarter period. This brings into great question whether an investor frenzy will be on the way.
TranspacificSteel deals in galvanized, galvalume, color coated, sheeting, expanded metal and a multitude of other steel products.
Research by CitiGroup has reported that Japan's industrial production will fall by 1-2% in March-April.
This slack which may loosen further in post months will be picked up by many other international steel companies globally causing major billions of profits to be lost by Japan.
Read on how the steel in Japan is affecting the economy.
Quoting from the Investing Contrarian website : "Citigroup expects a reduction in power supply if there is a meltdown at any of the nuclear facilities. A report from Nomura Economic Research also expects the short-term impact of the quake to be higher due to the damage to critical infrastructure over a wider area.
Steel prices rising in the near term due to lower steel output is one outcome. But demand for steel may fall as well, offsetting lower output. Once rebuilding begins, construction-related steel demand will surge. The risk is global steel production rising faster, which may happen as the current global steel capacity utilization is only 76%. That leaves enough headroom to expand, as it had peaked at 82% in 2010.
Steel prices are expected to be higher in 2011 compared with 2010, due to rising input costs. The current crisis adds a bit of volatility to it, but its effect on prices is still uncertain."
This brings major focus into the lower steel output sector for Japanese Industrialists as they need to determine whether or not to diminish these sunk costs and tread on the risky, dangerous waters of mid-level global trading, which would put both their pricing and reputation on the line.
Indeed the global steel market will have a very speculative year and bring both deep concern and interest until mid 2012.
