Every tradesman needs specialized tools to be a top performer in their field. A hairdresser's most used tool is the hairdressing scissor. Hairdressing scissors come in many styles and price points. If you cut hair occasionally you could get by with an inexpensive scissor however if you cut hair for a living a quality scissor or better yet a set of scissors is essential. Quality hairdressing scissors are made out of light weight steel with cobalt added for strength. They are weighted for ease of use and have a finger rest for comfort.
There are different types of scissors for different hair styles and the hairdresser's style of cutting. Curved blades will make it easier to cut around ears and for shaping certain styles. Longer blades are good for long hair, shorter blades are better for short laired styles and thinning shears are needed for thinning and tapering. Some scissors have small grooves on one side of the blade to hold the hair straight while it is cut. These are best used for thick hair. A good hairdresser will have a set of scissors to be prepared for every hair style and type of hair.
To keep your scissors in the best of shape they should only be used on clean hair. Styling products and dirty hair will leave a film on the blades which will dull them after repeated use. The blades should be wiped clean after each hair cut and cleaned and oiled periodically. Clean your scissors with warm water and a mild detergent. Open the blades wide when cleaning to remove any dirt and grime from the entire length of the blade. Rinse them well and dry with a soft cloth. After cleaning apply oil to the meeting point of the blades and open and close them a few times to distribute the oil, wipe any excess off.
It is important that you treat your hairdressing scissors as the specialized professional tool that they are. Use them only to cut hair, be careful not to drop them which can damage the tip or bend the blade. And be sure to adjust the tension screw occasionally as it will loosen with repeated use.
The right pair of hairdressing scissors will not only make it easier for the hairdresser to cut the desired style and to be comfortable enough to use all day but quality hairdressing scissors are made to last. With the proper care they will last many years so the investment will pay for itself in the long run.
