Mercedes SLS
Mercedes has a brand new supercar named the Mercedes SLS AMG. With starting prices of around 180,000 bucks it is priced to directly compete with the likes of Aston Martin, Ferrari and Porsche. Besides all the normal overall performance comparisons there is one thing this super car has that the others don't - the gullwing Mercedes is back. Entertainment: well, there's a 6.2 litre engine in the front offering a rumble to match nearly anything to leave Detroit. With over 550 horsepower the SLS would be an entertaining drive even if the overall handling was poor. Fortunately that's not the case. It is agile, poised and although its feels quite stiff on the road the combination of handling and engine provides a great drive.
In terms of practicality the vehicle is a bit of a mixed bag. Mercedes have obviously considered how this car is going to be used and the Mercedes SLS AMG incorporates standard features to provide everyday functionality like sat-nav along with a good stereo. However the gullwings, as iconic as they're, make it a real discomfort to get in and out of the car, make the car very wide and also you really need to stretch out to pull the doors down once you are inside. The design also means headroom is fairly tight as well.
The gearbox really is a double clutched matter which works really well. There's a short delay when you flick the paddles but in general it feels extremely responsive and sharp. The car is really obviously rear wheel drive. The seating position is really back and also harks back to honest, old school GT's and combined with the razor-sharp steering you've total faith in where the front of the car is going to go. This super car can go round corners really, really fast - in the event you tried hard enough you can probably keep up with a 4-wheel drive Porsche 911 Turbo. It's also blazingly fast in a straight line - very impressive for a weighty, front engined GT.
Looking at value for money - can any car at this price be regarded as reasonable value? Possibly not but put together with its peers it is competitively priced. Let's look at it one more way - in opposition to the Mercedes McLaren SLR, the SLS is faster, handles better and is much less costly to the tune of almost two hundred thousand dollars. So, the SLS is a loud and raucous affair dominated by the enormous powerhouse of an engine - yet at the exact same time civilized by the common high standard of usability and refinement that you'd expect from a Mercedes.
