Hair Care - How to Stay in Control?
Hair is made of 3 layers. The external is known the cuticle and is made up of lots of cells like tiles on a roof. When the tiles lie flat, your hair will be smooth, healthy and look glossy because the light will bounce off the surface. However, when you have subjected it to too much brushing, combing, processing, heat and extremes of whether, some of the cells will be damaged. Think of the cumulative effect of these forces like a whirlwind hitting your roof. The surface ends up rough, pitted and drab and may split into layers. And that is when you need to do some excellent repair work, or get a decent trim and start again. Try the following situations.
Assess the damage
How strong is your hair? Hold a strand between two pairs of tweezers about 7.5cm (3 in) apart and pull. If it is healthy, it should stretch another 30% more (about 2.5cm or 1 in) before it breaks. If it breaks before that, it may have lost some of its elasticity due to chemicals, styling or sun damage.
Next, run your fingers through your hair and feel your scalp. If there is little movement of the skin and it feels tight, your circulation may be poor. If it feels spongy, your scalp may be inflamed or suffering from a build up of toxins. A scalp massage may help.
How does your hair feel after shampooing, but before you add your conditioner? If it feels rough, your shampoo may be too harsh and you may need one for combination hair or with rich conditioning oils.
Massage your scalp
Next time you shampoo, focus on cleansing your scalp rather than just your hair and use a conditioning shampoo (one that contains jojoba or sweet conditioning oil will do). Don't be put off if you have greasy hair as these oils could actually help regulate further production of oil because they trick your hair into believing it is producing the oils itself. As you shampoo, massage your scalp with your palms and fingertips to help soothe the skin, encourage blood circulation and boost skin renewal.
Try a salon-style treatment or an overnight fix
Take one teaspoon of hair-treatment oil (or almond or olive oil). Starting at the front of your hair and working backwards towards the nape of your neck, massage it deeply into your scalp using the pads of your fingers, kneading as you go. Leave the oil to soak in for about 10 minutes, then shampoo out with a mild shampoo. Next, apply a conditioning treatment. Wrap a towel or cling film around your head to generate heat and help the treatment to penetrate more deeply into each hair shift. Leave for about an hour then rinse well.
Alternatively, mix together 3 tablespoons of mashed avocado, 2 tablespoons of carrot juice, 3 tablespoons of olive oil and a drop of essential oil such ylang ylang or jasmine. Work the mixture into wet hair and cover with a scarf or cling film. Rinse hair (don't shampoo it out) the next day.
Hair dos
- Shampoo gently, one section at a time, working down the shafts of the hair in line with the cuticles.
- If you can bear it, rinse with cold water from a jug or a blast of cold water from the shower to tighten the cuticles. Alternatively, rinse with the juice of a lemon or a capful of white vinegar diluted in a litre (two pints) of cold water; the acid will tighten the cuticles, which will help your hair shine. Then condition and rinse again.
- Dry your hair on the coldest setting of the hairdryer and use a warmer setting only for styling. Point the dryer down the hair shaft and follow your brush with the nozzle. Finish each section with a blast of cool air to close the cuticles.
Hair don'ts
- Don't rinse your hair in bath water as this contains alkaline soap residue that leaves dulling deposits on the hair.
- Don't towel dry, as it can tangle and roughen the cuticle. Gently squeeze the hair with a towel if you must, but very gently.
- Don't be scared to change products if your hair doesn't seem to be responding any more. Your hair won't get used to your ordinary shampoo because there are no chemical reactions between your hair and ingredients such as mint, rosemary, lemon or whatever. If you feel as though your shampoo isn't doing such a good job at times, it may be because stress, too much sun or your diet has affected your hair. That is when you may want to experiment with other formulas.
